Attracting backyard birds can be an exciting time to establish a great season for bird watching in your backyard. In the spring, there seems to be new visitors to your backyard every day. Spring is a wonderful time for humans, but it is a crucial point in time for our feathered friends. They have just arrived after following their long bird migration pattern. No matter how much fatigue they may be feeling, the stress on their bodies has just begun. Food sources may not be available or easily accessible.

When wild birds arrive they must stake out and lay claim to a breeding territory, undertake bird mating, build a bird nest and care for baby birds. Unlike us humans who take many years to complete this process, our backyard birds must accomplish all of these requirements of life completed in just a few short months.
Attracting Backyard Birds in the Spring Takes Preparation
A good way to prepare to attract wild birds is to create a journal to keep track of when wild birds appear in your yard. Have this knowledge gives you an edge on when you need to start getting the yard ready for their arrival. Then two weeks before their anticipated arrival start preparing your bird feeders and birdhouses.
  • backyard bird feeders, bird baths and birdhouses should be checked to make sure that they are clean and in proper functioning condition
  • a quick rinsing with warm water and detergent gets rid of the dust and the remnants from the past year
  • fill the feeders with fresh seed, syrup or suet.
Keep in mind that wild birds do not follow a calendar but they will usually arrived around the same time each year. However, by keeping a journal you can easily determine an average arrival date.
Protecting the Tranquility of Your Backyard Birds
To enjoy bird watching throughout the season requires that your backyard be designed to minimize the enemies and competition for food. Bird feeders attract other animals then just your birds. Squirrels have a tremendous tenacity to eat at your bird feeders. Therefore, it's prudent to secure these bird feeders to minimize competition for food. Also you need to protect the birdhouses from unwanted guest so that the young can hatch and join the bird population as intended. Decorative birdhouses can be placed anywhere in your yard. Depending on the type of bird you want to attract determines the birdhouses that you place in the yard.
